Practical tips
Editorial- Book Schonbrunn Palace interior tickets well in advance: entry is timed and summer slots can be gone two to three weeks before your date, and the State Apartments ticket alone is 28 euros while the full Grand Tour is 38 euros.
- Do not buy classical concert tickets from costumed Mozart sellers on Stephansplatz; buy directly from wiener-staatsoper.at, musikverein.at or konzerthaus.at, where Staatsoper standing room starts around 13 euros versus the 35 to 75+ euros (and reported overcharges up to 160 euros) the street touts charge.
- Since Wiener Linien discontinued its 48-hour and 72-hour tickets on January 1, 2026, compare a stack of 24-hour tickets (10.20 euros each, 9.70 euros bought in the app) against the Vienna City Card's transport-inclusive tiers (19 euros for 24 hours up to 39 euros for 7 days) before assuming the old multi-day transit ticket still exists.
- Visit Schonbrunn's gardens for free starting at 6:30am instead of paying for interior access if budget is tight; the palace grounds alone are worth the trip.
- Guard bags and pockets specifically on the U1 line between Stephansplatz and Reumannplatz and at the Naschmarkt, the two spots where Vienna's pickpocketing activity is most concentrated.
- Factor the local overnight tax into hotel budgeting: it rose from 3.2 percent to 5 percent of the room rate on July 1, 2026, and is scheduled to reach 8 percent on July 1, 2027.
