What it is
A Viennese schnitzel house with two branches in the first district, serving a pounded, plate-overhanging pork schnitzel with potato salad since 1905.
Why travelers eat here
For the schnitzel, which is the version of the dish Vienna is famous for and is done here at a scale that is genuinely funny the first time it arrives.
What is genuinely good
An excellent, enormous schnitzel. Two branches within five minutes of each other. Daily opening, late at Backerstrasse. Potato salad that is better than it needs to be.
Downsides
Queues at the original branch. Pork rather than veal. Brisk table-turning. The dining rooms are tight.
Best for
Any first visit to Vienna, and anyone happy to share, because one schnitzel is close to two portions.
Consider eating elsewhere if
You specifically want veal Wiener Schnitzel, in which case Figlmuller sells that too but it is not what the queue is for.
Practical advice
Book, or go to Backerstrasse rather than Wollzeile, which is larger and open later for the same food. Order one schnitzel between two if you also want a starter.
Prices and reservations
A la carte, no set menu. Reservations taken online for both branches and strongly advised in the evening.
Getting there
U1 or U3 to Stephansplatz, then two to five minutes on foot. Wollzeile is reached through a covered passage off the street.
Where it sits
The first district, immediately east of St Stephen's cathedral, in the dense grid of lanes between Stephansplatz and the Ringstrasse.
How long to allow
An hour and a half.
The RuinMyTrip verdict
Go to the Backerstrasse branch, not the queue at Wollzeile, and share one schnitzel unless you are very hungry.

Figlmuller has two branches in the old town. Backerstrasse 6 is open daily 11:30am to 11:30pm with the kitchen running to 10pm, and Wollzeile 5 is open daily 11am to 10:30pm. The schnitzel is the point: pounded until it overhangs the plate on every side, fried in a succession of pans, and served with potato salad rather than anything hot. It is pork rather than veal, which purists complain about and which is stated…
