What it is
A museum in Landstrasse designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser inside a converted Thonet furniture factory, holding the permanent collection of his work alongside changing photography and ecology exhibitions.
Why travelers go
Because the building makes his case better than his paintings do. Uneven floors, irregular windows and planted trees are not decoration here, they are the thesis, and you walk through it.
What is genuinely good

Downsides and tourist traps

Pair it with the Hundertwasserhaus a few streets away, which is a residential building you can only see from outside and costs nothing. An hour covers the museum. Wear shoes you are steady in.

Landstrasse, the third district, east of the centre near the Danube canal, in a residential quarter that also contains the Hundertwasserhaus. Quiet, ordinary Vienna rather than the imperial version.
How long to allow
About an hour for the museum, or ninety minutes with a temporary exhibition. Add twenty minutes to walk to the Hundertwasserhaus.

Accompanying persons of people with disabilities receive free admission, but the floors are deliberately uneven throughout, which is a genuine obstacle for anyone with limited mobility.
