What it is
A grand hotel on Philharmoniker Strasse directly behind the Vienna State Opera, open since 1876, with its own cafe, the Rote Bar restaurant and the original Sachertorte made on site.
Why travelers stay here
For the opera. Being ninety seconds from the door of the Staatsoper changes what an evening performance costs you in time and logistics, and nothing else at this level is as close.
What is genuinely good
The position behind the opera, a cafe open sixteen hours a day, the Rote Bar, and a level of traditional service that has largely disappeared elsewhere.
Downsides
A permanent cake queue at the door. Dense traditional decoration that reads as heavy to modern eyes. Top-of-market pricing with no published rate card.
Best for
Anyone going to the opera, and anyone who wants Vienna's imperial register rather than its modern one.
Consider staying elsewhere if
You want contemporary design or a quiet arrival. The seventh district has better-value hotels with more space.
Practical advice
Use the Philharmoniker Strasse entrance rather than pushing through the cake queue. If you are going to the opera, book dinner in the Rote Bar before rather than after, because the kitchen is busiest at the interval.

Getting there
U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz, then three minutes on foot, or trams 1, 2, 71 and D to Oper. From the airport, the City Airport Train to Wien Mitte then one metro stop.

Philharmoniker Strasse in the first district, wedged between the State Opera and the Albertina, two minutes from the Hofburg and five from Stephansplatz.
How long to stay
Two nights, or one if you are here for a single performance.
