A grand hotel on Philharmoniker Strasse directly behind the Vienna State Opera, open since 1876, with its own cafe, the Rote Bar restaurant and the original Sachertorte made on site.
For the opera. Being ninety seconds from the door of the Staatsoper changes what an evening performance costs you in time and logistics, and nothing else at this level is as close.
The position behind the opera, a cafe open sixteen hours a day, the Rote Bar, and a level of traditional service that has largely disappeared elsewhere.
A permanent cake queue at the door. Dense traditional decoration that reads as heavy to modern eyes. Top-of-market pricing with no published rate card.
Anyone going to the opera, and anyone who wants Vienna's imperial register rather than its modern one.
You want contemporary design or a quiet arrival. The seventh district has better-value hotels with more space.
Use the Philharmoniker Strasse entrance rather than pushing through the cake queue. If you are going to the opera, book dinner in the Rote Bar before rather than after, because the kitchen is busiest at the interval.
Room rates are not published as a fixed list and vary with season and availability. Cafe Sacher and the Rote Bar are open to non-residents and take reservations.
U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz, then three minutes on foot, or trams 1, 2, 71 and D to Oper. From the airport, the City Airport Train to Wien Mitte then one metro stop.
Philharmoniker Strasse in the first district, wedged between the State Opera and the Albertina, two minutes from the Hofburg and five from Stephansplatz.
Two nights, or one if you are here for a single performance.
Stay here if you are going to the opera and the price is survivable. The address is doing most of the work, and the address is genuinely worth it.

Cafe Sacher Vienna is open Monday to Sunday from 7 am to 11 pm, and the hotel's Rote Bar restaurant runs Monday to Sunday from 12 pm to 12 am. Room rates are not published as a fixed list and move with the season. The hotel sits directly behind the State Opera, which is the reason to stay here rather than anywhere else at the price: you can leave a performance and be in your room in ninety seconds.
