What it is
A Baroque palace on the upper terrace of the Belvedere complex, built for Prince Eugene of Savoy and now a museum of Austrian art holding the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings, including The Kiss.
Why travelers go
For Klimt, and specifically for The Kiss, which is one of the few paintings that genuinely rewards the trip. The Baroque palace interior and the view down the gardens toward the city are the second reason.
What is genuinely good
The Klimt rooms are unmatched, the building is a first-rank Baroque palace in its own right, and the gardens outside cost nothing. Free entry for everyone under 19 and a 19 euro rate for students under 26 and over-65s make it accessible for families and young travellers.
Downsides and tourist traps
The Kiss draws a persistent crowd and the room around it is the least comfortable part of the museum. The 23 euro ticket is for the Upper Belvedere alone, so seeing the Lower Belvedere as well means paying again. Much of the rest of the collection goes unlooked-at.
Best for
Anyone who wants to see Klimt properly, visitors interested in Baroque architecture, and families given the free under-19 entry.
Consider skipping if
You have limited time in Vienna and a broader interest in art history, in which case the Kunsthistorisches Museum covers far more ground. Skip it if crowds around a single famous painting are the thing you most dislike about museums.
Practical advice
Go at opening or in the last two hours; the Klimt room is markedly calmer at both ends of the day. Walk the gardens down to the Lower Belvedere afterwards, which is free. Buy online to avoid the ticket queue, which is separate from the entry queue.
Tickets and reservations
An admission ticket to the Upper Belvedere is 23,00 euros. Seniors over 65 and students under 26 pay 19,00 euros. Children and young people under 19 pay nothing. Holders of a valid Vienna City Card receive a discount.
Getting there
Tram D to Schloss Belvedere for the upper entrance, or tram 18 and O to Quartier Belvedere. Wien Hauptbahnhof is roughly a ten-minute walk.
Where it sits
Landstrasse, the third district, on rising ground south-east of the Ringstrasse, with the formal gardens running downhill to the Lower Belvedere and the city skyline beyond. It is a quiet, embassy-heavy quarter well away from the Stephansplatz crowds.
How long to allow
Ninety minutes to two hours for the Upper Belvedere. Add another hour if you walk the gardens and continue to the Lower Belvedere.
Accessibility
The palace is served by lifts and the Belvedere publishes accessibility information for visitors with reduced mobility.

Worth the 23 euros for the Klimt rooms alone, and better value than it looks once you count the free gardens. Go early, and if you are under 19, or travelling with anyone who is, the arithmetic is even easier.
