Share your experienceThe Upper Belvedere charges 23,00 euros for an admission ticket, 19,00 euros for seniors over 65 and for students under 26, and nothing at all for children and young people under 19. What almost everybody comes for is Klimt's The Kiss, which hangs here along with the largest collection of his work anywhere. That concentration is both the attraction and the problem: one room absorbs the crowd while a baroque palace full of Austrian art from the medieval period onward sits comparatively quiet around it. The building is a Baroque summer palace with formal gardens running down to the Lower Belvedere, and the gardens are free to walk. On a good day that walk is a genuine part of the visit rather than a way of getting between two ticket desks.
What was great
The Klimt holding is the best anywhere and The Kiss is genuinely worth the trip. Under-19s get in free and the concession rate covers students up to 26. The gardens between Upper and Lower Belvedere are free and are one of the most pleasant walks in central Vienna.
What nearly ruined the trip
The room holding The Kiss is congested for most of the day and people queue to photograph it rather than look at it. The 23 euro ticket covers the Upper Belvedere only, so a full visit to both palaces costs more. The rest of the collection is unfairly overlooked as a result of the Klimt concentration.
