Share your experienceThe Hofburg charges 20,00 euros for adults and 12,00 euros for children from age 6, on fixed admission times, with the standard route running about 60 minutes. What the ticket buys is three things in sequence: the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Silver Collection. The Sisi Museum is the reason most people come and it is better than its subject matter suggests, because it spends much of its length dismantling the sentimental version of Empress Elisabeth that Austrian tourism otherwise sells hard. Fixed admission times matter here. This is not a come-when-you-like palace, and turning up without a slot in high season is how people end up eating lunch instead.
What was great
The Sisi Museum treats its subject critically rather than as merchandise, which is rare for a national icon. One ticket covers three collections in a single route. Children from six pay 12 euros, and the whole thing takes about an hour, so it fits into a day rather than consuming one.
What nearly ruined the trip
Fixed admission times mean the visit has to be planned around. The route is one-way and busy through the middle of the day. The gift-shop version of Sisi outside the museum flatly contradicts the honest account inside it, which is a strange note to leave on.
