Figlmuller has two branches in the old town. Backerstrasse 6 is open daily 11:30am to 11:30pm with the kitchen running to 10pm, and Wollzeile 5 is open daily 11am to 10:30pm. The schnitzel is the point: pounded until it overhangs the plate on every side, fried in a succession of pans, and served with potato salad rather than anything hot. It is pork rather than veal, which purists complain about and which is stated plainly on the menu. The Wollzeile branch, down a covered passage, is the original and the more crowded. Backerstrasse is larger, later, and easier to get into, and the schnitzel is identical.

What was great

A genuinely enormous, genuinely well-made schnitzel. Two branches five minutes apart, which doubles your chance of a table. Open daily, which in Vienna is not a given.

What nearly ruined the trip

Queues at Wollzeile that people join without realising the other branch exists. It is pork, not veal, so anyone expecting a Wiener Schnitzel in the strict sense should order accordingly. Service is efficient in the way of a place that turns tables fast.
