Share your experienceCafe Sacher Vienna is open Monday to Sunday from 7 am to 11 pm, and the hotel's Rote Bar restaurant runs Monday to Sunday from 12 pm to 12 am. Room rates are not published as a fixed list and move with the season. The hotel sits directly behind the State Opera, which is the reason to stay here rather than anywhere else at the price: you can leave a performance and be in your room in ninety seconds. The Sachertorte is made on the premises and sold in boxes at the door, which produces a permanent queue that has nothing to do with the hotel. Rooms are heavily traditional, red and gilt and oil paintings, and the hotel does not apologise for it. Anyone hoping for Scandinavian restraint should book elsewhere.
What was great
Ninety seconds from the State Opera. A cafe open from 7 am to 11 pm, which covers both a pre-opera coffee and a post-opera slice. Service in the old European style, done properly.
What nearly ruined the trip
The cake queue outside is constant and can make arriving with luggage awkward. The decoration is maximalist and dark. Among the most expensive hotels in Vienna and, as with all of them, no fixed rate is published.
