Hofburg Imperial Palace

What it is

The winter residence of the Habsburgs in central Vienna, now a visitor route through the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum devoted to Empress Elisabeth, and the Silver Collection of the imperial household.

Why travelers go

For the Sisi Museum, which is a genuinely thoughtful account of a woman who has been turned into a tourism product, and for state rooms that show how the Habsburgs actually lived rather than how they were painted.

What is genuinely good

Three collections on one ticket, a route that takes about an hour, and a museum that argues with its own legend instead of selling it. Children from age 6 pay 12,00 euros, which makes it viable for families in an expensive city.

Downsides and tourist traps

Fixed admission times remove any flexibility from the day. The corridors are narrow and the middle of the day is congested. Photography is restricted in much of the route.

Best for

First-time visitors to Vienna, anyone interested in the Habsburgs, and families given the child rate. It also works well as a shorter indoor stop between larger museums.

Consider skipping if

You are choosing between this and Schonbrunn on a short trip. Schonbrunn has the gardens and the scale; the Hofburg has the better museum. Pick one rather than doing both badly.

Practical advice

Book a fixed admission time rather than hoping to walk up. Sixty minutes is the honest allowance for the standard route. Go early or late, since the middle of the day is when tour groups move through.

Getting there

U3 to Herrengasse or U1 and U3 to Stephansplatz, both a short walk. Trams 1, 2, D and 71 stop on the Ring at Burgring.

Where it sits

Dead centre of Vienna inside the Ring, between the Michaelerplatz and the Heldenplatz, with the Spanish Riding School in the same complex and the Kunsthistorisches Museum across the Ringstrasse.

How long to allow

About 60 minutes for the standard route, which is what the fixed admission times are built around. Ninety minutes if you read everything in the Sisi Museum.

Accessibility

All exhibition areas are reachable by ramp, mobile wheelchair rails and lift, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge against a deposit of identification. Accessible parking is on Heldenplatz.

Better than it sounds, mostly because the Sisi Museum refuses to play along with the myth it exists to explain. Book a time slot, allow an hour, and treat the gift shop as a separate and less honest experience.
