Editorial- Only get into licensed Fotaxi cabs, the regulated meter runs 1,300 forints base fare plus 521 forints per kilometer and 130 forints per minute waiting, with an 800 forint airport surcharge as of August 2026.
- Treat any bar or club recommendation from a taxi driver or a stranger on the street as a red flag, both the UK Foreign Office and US State Department document a commission based scam that funnels tourists into venues with inflated bills.
- Ask to see a priced menu before ordering anything at a bar in the Jewish Quarter, and leave if the venue won't show one, per official government travel guidance.
- A single BKK metro, bus, or tram ticket is 500 forints, cheaper than assuming you need the 2,200 forint Airport Express (line 100E) for every trip.
- Compare the Budapest Card against buying separately, resale platforms list it starting around US$60.72 for the shortest duration, and it excludes the 100E airport bus even though it covers the rest of transit plus 30 plus attractions.
- Visit Szimpla Kert or the Kazinczy utca ruin bar cluster in District VII (Erzsebetvaros) for the genuine version of the scene, which traces back to a documented 2002 to 2004 origin, rather than an imitation set up to look old.
- Go in the shoulder season, mid September through late October, Wikivoyage notes less rain and long sunny days, and it will beat the crowds tied to 2025's roughly 7 million international overnight visitors and the 2026 Champions League final.
