Budapest tourism tax 2026: 4 percent of the gross room price in District V

Central Budapest charges a 4 percent tourism tax on the gross room price in 2026, while District XVI charges a flat 400 forints per person per night. Three nights at 60,000 forints adds 7,200 forints.

A hotel guest in central Budapest pays a tourism tax of 4 percent of the gross accommodation price in 2026. The rate is published by the District V local government, whose tax page states that the base is the accommodation fee for the guest nights begun and that the rate is 4 percent of the gross accommodation fee.

The rate depends on the district

Budapest sets this tax district by district rather than city wide, so the method changes as you cross the map. District XVI publishes a flat charge instead, stating on its own tax page that the tax is 400 forints per person per guest night with effect from January 1, 2026. Two people in that outer district pay a fixed 800 forints a night, while the same pair in an expensive District V hotel pay a percentage that climbs with the room rate.

A worked example

Three nights in a District V hotel at 60,000 forints gross per night is 180,000 forints of room charges, and the 4 percent tourism tax on that is 7,200 forints. The same three nights for two guests in District XVI would carry 2,400 forints of tax, because the flat rate is charged per person rather than per room.

What is still unclear

Neither district page consulted here lists every Budapest district in one table, so a traveller booking outside District V has to check that district's own tax page to learn which of the two methods applies.
