What it is
A grand restaurant beside the City Park in Budapest, open since 1894, serving classical Hungarian cooking in a formal dining room next to the zoo and the Szechenyi baths.
Why travelers eat here

What is genuinely good
A genuinely grand dining room, classical Hungarian cooking done properly, the original Gundel palacsinta, and a garden terrace in summer.

Stiff service. A reputation it leans on. Away from the centre. Expensive for Budapest, though not for the setting.

Anyone marking an occasion, and anyone combining dinner with the Szechenyi baths across the park.

You want the modern Budapest food scene, which is in District VII and is a different city entirely.
Practical advice
Book, and go for dinner rather than lunch when the room is lit properly. Order the palacsinta even if you are full. The baths are a five-minute walk if you are making an evening of it.
