Practical tips
Editorial- Book the Auschwitz-Birkenau entry card before anything else. Cards are issued only online at visit.auschwitz.org, reservations open up to three months ahead, and the free cards without an educator can be booked up to seven days ahead. In high season the free slots go long before that window closes.
- Budget 150 zloty per person, about 35 euros, if you want a guided tour with an educator at the memorial. Entry to the grounds itself is free.
- Sleep in Kazimierz or Podgorze rather than on the main square. The stag trade makes the Old Town loud on weekend nights, and the alternatives are ten minutes away, cheaper and quieter.
- Eat one street off the Rynek Glowny. Krakow is still inexpensive, but the square itself is priced for the 15 million and the difference is immediate.
- Do the Old Town early. The square and Wawel are both at their worst between late morning and mid afternoon in summer, and both are genuinely quiet before 09:00.
- Take the train or an organised transfer to Oswiecim rather than improvising. It is roughly 70 km each way, and arriving without a booked entry card means you do not get in.
