RuinMyTrip guide to Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

A branch of the Museum of Krakow in Oskar Schindler's former enamelware factory in Zablocie, holding a permanent exhibition on Krakow under German occupation from 1939 to 1945.

Why travelers go

It is the most affecting account of the occupation anywhere in the city, and it does it by rebuilding the streets rather than by explaining them. Schindler's preserved office is a small part of a much larger story.

What is genuinely good

Exceptional exhibition design, a genuine sense of walking through the occupied city, free entry on Mondays, and English-language guided tours at set times.

Downsides and tourist traps

Cramped, dark and heavily booked. Slots sell out in advance in summer. Expensive by Krakow standards. It is not the film, and people who come expecting it say so.

Best for

Anyone interested in the Second World War in central Europe, and anyone who wants to understand the city beyond the Old Town.

Consider skipping if

You are travelling with young children, or you want the Schindler story specifically. Also skip it if you cannot book ahead in high season, because turning up is not a plan here.

Practical advice

Book online in advance and bring original ID matching the booking, which is checked. Last entry is ninety minutes before closing. Monday is free but cannot be booked ahead, so queue early.

Tickets and reservations

Normal 60 PLN, reduced 45 PLN, family ticket for up to four people 120 PLN. Free admission on Mondays, with tickets available only at the branch and in limited numbers.

Getting there

Tram to Plac Bohaterow Getta then a ten-minute walk over the river into Zablocie, or a twenty-five-minute walk from the Old Town through Kazimierz.

Where it sits

Zablocie, a post-industrial district across the Vistula from Kazimierz, now half warehouses and half new apartment blocks. The MOCAK contemporary art museum is next door.

How long to allow

Ninety minutes to two hours. The route is one way and takes as long as it takes.

Accessibility

Lifts serve the exhibition levels, though the reconstructed corridors are narrow and get congested.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

The best museum in Krakow and worth the sixty zloty, as long as you book ahead and arrive knowing it is about the city rather than about Schindler.

Sixty Zloty for the Factory, and It Is Not the Film You Remember

Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, a branch of the Museum of Krakow, charges 60 PLN for a normal ticket and 45 PLN reduced, with a family ticket for up to four people at 120 PLN. It opens Monday 10:00 to 15:00 and Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 20:00, and closes on the first Tuesday of each month. The common misconception is that this is a Schindler museum. It is not. The permanent exhibition is about Krakow under German…
