Practical tips
Editorial- Book the access fee more than three days ahead. It is 5 euros in advance and 10 euros inside the three-day window, and in 2025 forty-nine per cent of payers paid the higher rate. It applies on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July 2026, between 08:30 and 16:00.
- Stay overnight if you can. Overnight guests are exempt from the access fee entirely, which usually makes one night in Venice cheaper in total than two separate day trips.
- Do not eat within sight of the Basilica. Overcharging around Piazza San Marco is systematic, and the same meal one bridge inland typically costs a fraction of it. Check for a coperto and service charge, and never order fish or meat priced per etto without asking what the portion weighs.
- Agree the gondola price against the officially posted association rate before boarding, and confirm the duration. Charging above the posted rate or adding undisclosed surcharges is the most documented overcharge in the city.
- Do the vaporetto maths. A single ride is 9.50 euros and a 24-hour pass is 25 euros, so the pass pays for itself on the third trip. If you are staying in the centre and walking, you may not need either.
- If you are travelling between late October and January, pack waterproof footwear and check the tide forecast. Acqua alta events last two to four hours around high tide, and some vaporetto sections suspend service while the water is up.
