Thirty-Five Euros a Head if You Do Not Turn Up
Review of Antiche Carampane
Been to Venice? This page needs you more than it needs us.
A first-hand review outranks desk research every time, and yours will sit above this one.
Share your experienceAntiche Carampane charges a no-show and late-cancellation penalty of 35 euros per person, and tables booked for the first evening seating at 7:30 p.m. are held only until 9:30 p.m. Those two policies tell you exactly how the restaurant runs. It is a small fish restaurant hidden in the lanes of San Polo, so hard to find that its own sign reads that you do not arrive here by chance. There is no tourist menu, no pizza and no lagoon-view terrace, which in Venice is a statement of intent. What there is instead is the day's catch, cooked simply, in a dining room of about a dozen tables. Book well ahead and give yourself time to get lost on the way.
What was great
Fish bought that morning and cooked without decoration. A dozen tables, so the kitchen can actually cook rather than assemble. A location so awkward that the passing tourist trade never finds it.
What nearly ruined the trip
A 35 euro per person no-show penalty and a two-hour table limit on the early seating. Genuinely hard to find, even with a map. Small enough that booking weeks ahead is normal, and it closes for a summer holiday.
