Practical tips
Editorial- Book Pompeii by name and time slot before you go. The site sells a maximum of 20,000 tickets a day and, from 16 March to 14 October, only 15,000 of those are in the 09:00 to 13:00 band. In summer that band sells out days ahead.
- Pick the right Pompeii ticket. The 20 euro express covers the ancient city only; the 25 euro full ticket adds the suburban villas and Villa Regina at Boscoreale; a 30 euro pass covers Oplontis and the Stabiae villas over three days. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay 2 euros.
- Keep your phone in a pocket, not your hand, when you are walking near the road. Scooter-riding snatch thefts are a specific and repeated pattern in Naples, and they target the visible phone rather than the person.
- Treat the Circumvesuviana as a pickpocketing environment. It is the train to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento, it gets extremely crowded, and bag snatching on it is a known problem. Bags in front, nothing in outside pockets.
- Go to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale before Pompeii, not after. Nearly everything moveable was lifted off the site and put in that museum, so seeing it first turns Pompeii from empty rooms into a city.
- Eat away from the main tourist axis and the price falls immediately. Naples has an unusually small gap between the tourist rate and the local rate, but the gap is still real on Via San Gregorio Armeno and around the port.
