Practical tips
Editorial- Use Nice as a base, not a beach. The coastal railway reaches Villefranche, Monaco, Antibes, Cannes and Menton for a few euros each way, and those are the days people remember.
- Expect pebbles. Nice's beach is shingle, and the comfortable sections are private concessions with a day rate. The free public stretches are fine but bring something to lie on and shoes you can walk into the water in.
- Budget the tourist tax separately. It runs roughly 1.50 to 6 euros per person per night depending on property class, and unclassified rentals are charged 1 to 5 per cent of the nightly rate excluding VAT.
- Check the cruise calendar if the old town matters to you. From January 2026 the Riviera framework caps disembarkation at 3,000 passengers per port per call and 15 ships per port per month in July and August, but a capped day is still a crowded day.
- Shop the Cours Saleya market in the morning and eat from it. Market food in Nice is the one category that is genuinely good value, and socca is the local dish worth queueing for.
- Book accommodation early for July and August. Short-term rental caps in Nice moved from 120 nights to 90 and back to 120 inside six months, and supply at the top of the season is tight.
