Venice access fee 2026: 60 days, 5 or 10 euros, overnight guests exempt

Venice is not charging you to look at the water. It is charging day-trippers to walk into the historic centre on the days the city has decided it cannot absorb another surge. In 2026 that calendar is the largest the scheme has used.

When the fee applies in 2026

The contributo di accesso applies on 60 days between April and July: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3 April through 26 July, plus 6 April, the week beginning 27 April, and the week beginning 1 June. It is enforced from 08:30 to 16:00. Arrive as a day-tripper on one of those days, in that window, and you owe it.

What it costs

5 euros if you book more than three days ahead. 10 euros if you buy inside the three-day window. In 2025, 49% of the people who paid paid the higher rate. That is not a trivia statistic, it is the default outcome for anyone who treats the fee as a walk-up ticket.

Residents and overnight guests are exempt. Overnight guests still register. If you are already paying for a hotel night in the city, the fee is not stacked on top. Two separate day trips, on two fee days, with two last-minute 10 euro payments, is the expensive version of Venice. One overnight stay is usually cheaper in total.

Has it reduced the crowds?

Not in any way a visitor will notice. In 2025 the scheme collected 5,421,425 euros from 723,497 payments, nearly double 2024's 2.4 million euros from 485,062 payments across a 29-day run. The historic centre is down to 47,995 residents. Peak day-tripper counts have been put as high as 85,000. The fee raised money. It did not restore a quiet city.

Around San Marco the other costs are worse than the fee: restaurant overcharging is systematic, a single vaporetto ride is 9.50 euros, and gondola prices above the posted association rate are a documented pattern. The 5 euro access fee is the line item that is trivial to get right and embarrassing to get wrong.
