What it is

The state gallery of Venetian art, in the former Scuola della Carita and adjoining convent at the southern foot of the Accademia bridge, holding Venetian painting from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century.

Why travelers go

Because Venetian painting is the thing Venice actually produced, and this is where it is. Giorgione's Tempest, Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi and Leonardo's Vitruvian Man are all here.

What is genuinely good

A first-rank collection at 20 euros, with 2 euros for EU citizens aged 18 to 25 and free entry for under 18s. It is quiet in a city where nothing else is. Buying online lets you skip the ticket office queue.

Downsides and tourist traps

Labelling is thin and assumes prior knowledge. Twenty euros stings in a city that charges for everything. Online sales run through a single authorised operator, so anything else you find online is not the official channel.

Best for

Anyone with an interest in Renaissance painting, EU citizens aged 18 to 25 who effectively get it for 2 euros, and any visitor who has had enough of the San Marco crush.

Consider skipping if

You have one day in Venice and have never been, in which case the city itself and the Basilica come first. Skip it also if you want context and explanation rather than paintings, since the labelling will not provide it.

Getting there

Vaporetto line 1 or 2 to Accademia, which stops at the foot of the bridge outside. It is about a twenty-minute walk from Piazza San Marco across the Accademia bridge.

Where it sits

Dorsoduro, on the south side of the Grand Canal at the Accademia bridge, in the quieter university quarter. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Punta della Dogana are both a short walk east along the same bank.

How long to allow

Two hours for the full collection at a reasonable pace. Ninety minutes if you go straight for the sixteenth century.

Accessibility

Barrier-free entry is on the right side of the museum, on Calle della Carita, with lifts to the first floor and lifting platforms beyond. The route is not complete: between rooms XXII and XXIV on the first floor there are no lifting platforms, which interrupts the accessible route. Worth checking on arrival which sections are reachable that day.
