Vienna Ortstaxe 2026: 5 percent of the net room rate from 1 July

Vienna's local tax rose from 3.2 percent to 5 percent of the net accommodation charge on 1 July 2026, with a further step to 8 percent already scheduled for July 2027.
The rate
Vienna charges 5 percent Ortstaxe on overnight stays from 1 July 2026. The City of Vienna publishes the schedule in its own official guidance: 3.2 percent of the charge for the stay, excluding VAT and breakfast and after a flat deduction of 11 percent, applied until 30 June 2026; from 1 July 2026 until 30 June 2027 the rate is 5 percent of the charge for the stay, excluding VAT and breakfast; and from 1 July 2027 it becomes 8 percent. The flat 11 percent deduction belongs to the old rate only.
What a stay costs
Say the accommodation charge is 160 euro a night once VAT and breakfast are stripped out. Ortstaxe at 5 percent is 8 euro a night. Four nights adds 32 euro to the bill. The same stay before 1 July 2026 would have carried roughly 4.60 euro a night once the old rate and its 11 percent deduction were applied, so the increase is close to a doubling in practice.
What changes next
The 8 percent step is already in the published schedule for 1 July 2027, so an identical room booked next summer will cost more again. The hotel collects the tax and passes it to the city.
What the city page does not resolve for a traveller is how a hotel splits a rate that bundles breakfast, since only the accommodation part is taxable.
