Practical tips
Editorial- Go in late spring or early autumn. Summer hotel rates run 20 to 40 percent above the rest of the year, and mid-December gives you about six hours of daylight with sunset near 2:46 PM.
- Watch your bag in Gamla Stan specifically. Pickpocketing and bag snatching in Stockholm are described as common and rising, with the Old Town named repeatedly in travel advisories.
- Ride the metro for the art. It opened in 1950 and the station decoration has earned it the nickname of the world's longest art gallery, so a transit ticket doubles as an attraction.
- Do the math on a transit pass before buying one. The SL 30-day pass is 1,060 SEK, which only pays off on a long stay; Stockholm's single-ride fares are the third most expensive across 49 Northern European cities.
- Book the Vasa Museum ahead in summer. It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia at 1,353,453 visitors in 2024, and roughly four in five of those are foreign visitors arriving in the same months you are.
- Check the cruise schedule if you hate crowds. Ports of Stockholm expects 150-plus calls and around 300,000 passengers in 2026, and those passengers concentrate in the small footprint of Gamla Stan.
