What it is
Sweden's national museum of modern and contemporary art, on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, holding twentieth-century European and American work alongside changing exhibitions.
Why travelers go
For a collection well above the weight of the city, and for the walk to it. Skeppsholmen is the calmest place in central Stockholm and the museum is the reason to go there.
What is genuinely good
Picasso, Matisse, Dali and strong postwar American holdings. Free for under-18s. Niki de Saint Phalle's sculptures outside. A genuinely good restaurant with a harbour view.
Downsides and tourist traps
The permanent collection is compact and can be walked in an hour. No metro on the island. Pricey given the size.
Best for
Anyone who likes twentieth-century art, and families, given free entry for under-18s.
Consider skipping if
You have one day and have not yet seen the Vasa. That is the stronger call for a single-day visit.
Practical advice
Walk over from Gamla Stan rather than taking a bus, because the approach is half the experience. The architecture museum shares the building if you want to extend the visit.
Tickets and reservations
Regular 170 SEK, reduced 140 SEK, free for those 18 and under and for Klubb Moderna members. Temporary exhibitions are included.
Getting there
A fifteen-minute walk from Kungstradgarden metro across the Skeppsholmsbron bridge, or bus 65 which stops on the island.
Where it sits
Skeppsholmen, a small former naval island between Gamla Stan and Djurgarden, quiet, green, and with the best harbour views in the central city.
How long to allow
Two hours including the temporary exhibition, or an hour for the collection alone.
Accessibility
Step-free entry with lifts throughout; the bridge approach is level.
