What it is
A maritime museum on Djurgarden built around the warship Vasa, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, was raised in 1961, and survives around 98 per cent original.
Why travelers go
Because there is no other intact ship of this age anywhere. Photographs cannot convey the scale, and the carved stern in particular has to be seen from the upper galleries to make any sense.
What is genuinely good
A unique object, presented well, on six levels so you can work up the hull from keel to stern castle. Free entry for everyone up to 18. The combination ticket with Vrak is valid for 72 hours rather than one day.
Downsides and tourist traps
Low light for conservation reasons makes it a poor photography museum. It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia and feels it in high summer. Djurgarden is a tram or ferry ride from the centre.
Best for
Essentially every visitor to Stockholm, and particularly families given free entry for under-18s and children's fascination with the sheer size of it.
Consider skipping if
Almost nothing. If you are in Stockholm for one day and must choose, this beats the alternatives. Skip the Vrak combination unless you have a second day to use it.
Practical advice
Go at opening or in the last two hours; the middle of the day in summer is genuinely packed. Walk up to the top gallery first and work down, which reverses the standard flow. The combination ticket is valid 72 hours, so only buy it if you are staying that long.

Getting there
Tram 7 from Sergels torg to Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet, or the Djurgarden ferry from Slussen, which is the more enjoyable approach.
Where it sits
Djurgarden, the island park east of the centre, alongside the Nordiska Museet and a short walk from Skansen and the ABBA Museum. It is green, calm and entirely given over to museums and parkland.
How long to allow
Ninety minutes to two hours. The ship itself holds attention longer than people expect.
Accessibility
The museum is step-free with lifts serving all six levels.
