What it is
Sweden's national museum of art and design on Blasieholmen, opposite the royal palace, holding painting, sculpture and applied art from the sixteenth century to the present.
Why travelers go
The 2018 renovation transformed it. The Swedish eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are shown better here than anywhere, and the design galleries connect straight through to the furniture people come to Sweden to look at.
What is genuinely good
Excellent lighting and hanging, a strong Rembrandt, a coherent design collection, half-price entry in the last hour, and a free ground floor with a very good restaurant.
Downsides and tourist traps
Expensive at full price. Too big for the hour that the discounted ticket buys. Card or Swish payment only.
Best for
Anyone interested in European painting or in Scandinavian design, and anyone under 20, who gets in free.
Consider skipping if
You have already committed the day to Djurgarden. This deserves its own slot rather than a squeeze.
Practical advice
The last-hour ticket is half price and genuinely worth using if you are decisive. You still need a ticket even if you qualify for free entry. Bring a card; cash is not accepted.

Adults SEK 160, SEK 80 in the last 60 minutes before closing, free for under-20s. Groups of ten or more pay SEK 110 per person. The ticket covers temporary exhibitions and the collection displays.
Getting there
A ten-minute walk from Kungstradgarden metro along the waterfront, opposite the Grand Hotel and across the water from the royal palace.
Where it sits
Blasieholmen, on the central waterfront between Kungstradgarden and Skeppsholmen, with the palace opposite and a five-minute walk to the Moderna Museet bridge.
How long to allow
Two to three hours, or one focused hour on the discounted last-hour ticket.
Accessibility
Fully step-free after the renovation, with lifts to all floors.
