Share your experienceModerna Museet charges 170 SEK for a regular ticket and 140 SEK reduced, with free admission for those 18 and under. It opens daily at 10 and closes at 18. The collection is much stronger than most visitors expect from a city of this size: Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Rauschenberg, and one of the better holdings of twentieth-century art in northern Europe. Niki de Saint Phalle's sculptures outside are a Stockholm landmark in their own right. It sits on Skeppsholmen, a small island between Gamla Stan and Djurgarden, which means the approach is a walk over a bridge with the whole harbour laid out on either side. The building is unassuming and the setting does most of the work.
What was great
A serious modern collection for a mid-sized capital, free for everyone 18 and under, and the best-sited museum in Stockholm. The harbour views from the island are free whether you go in or not.
What nearly ruined the trip
A hundred and seventy krona is not cheap, the permanent collection is smaller than the reputation suggests, and Skeppsholmen is a fifteen-minute walk from anywhere with a metro station.
