Stockholm hotel tax 2026: 12 percent Swedish VAT on the room
by RuinMyTrip Editorial · 2d ago
Skatteverket puts VAT on hotel room rentals at 12 percent in 2026, so an 1,800 krona net rate becomes 2,016 kronor. No separate nightly city levy appears on the agency rate list.
The rate
Hotel rooms in Sweden carry 12 percent value added tax in 2026, according to Skatteverket, the Swedish tax agency. Its page on VAT rates and exemptions says a business should normally charge 12 percent on room rentals in hotel, guest house and hostel operations or similar. The same reduced rate covers services tied closely to the room. Conference arrangements are charged at 25 percent instead, which is why a meeting package and a bed can be taxed differently in the same building.
What a stay costs
Take a room at 1,800 kronor a night before tax. VAT at 12 percent adds 216 kronor, so one night is 2,016 kronor. Four nights is 7,200 kronor of room rate plus 864 kronor of tax, or 8,064 kronor in total. Where a price is already quoted with tax inside, the same 12 percent is sitting in the number rather than being added later.
No separate city levy
The agency rate list is where a Swedish accommodation charge would appear, and it shows only the 12 percent rate on room rentals, with no per person nightly visitor fee of the kind several European capitals collect.
What that source cannot settle on its own is whether any Stockholm specific charge exists outside the national VAT system, since the page covers national rates rather than municipal decisions.
