Practical tips
Editorial- Do not eat on the water in Nyhavn. Canal-side mains run 180 to 280 DKK against 120 to 160 DKK two blocks inland, and an outdoor Nyhavn beer is 60 to 82 DKK. The view costs roughly double.
- Rent a bike on day one. Copenhagen has around 400 kilometres of dedicated bike paths carrying over 2.7 million kilometres of cycling every weekday, and it is faster and far cheaper than taxis for the distances involved.
- Check whether CopenPay is running for your dates. Wonderful Copenhagen's scheme rewards cycling, arriving by train and picking up litter with free coffee, entries and kayak tours, but it is seasonal - the 2025 run was 17 June to 17 August.
- Price the Copenhagen Card against your actual plan. It bundles public transport with entry to over 80 attractions, so it wins if you are doing museums and loses if you are mostly walking and eating.
- Travel in May or September. Shoulder-season hotel and airfare prices typically drop 20 to 30 per cent against the July and August peak, and June has lighter crowds than either peak month.
- Budget the tourist tax and the Tivoli extras separately. Some hotels add 3 to 9 dollars per night, and Tivoli Gardens entry starts at 170 DKK in 2026 with rides charged on top.
