Practical tips
Editorial- Buy the HARUKA one-way discount ticket from Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station at 2,200 yen for adults and 1,100 yen for children, which requires a foreign passport and Temporary Visitor status.
- The EX100 and EX101 sightseeing express buses cost 500 yen in cash but run on limited days and are included at no additional fare in the 1,100 yen Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass, so pass holders should use them rather than avoid them.
- Reach Fushimi Inari Taisha before 8:00am, because it charges nothing and never closes, so the upper torii paths are effectively empty at dawn.
- Budget 1,300 yen for Nijo Castle including Ninomaru Palace, and reserve the separate 1,000 yen Honmaru Palace ticket in advance if you want to see it.
- Do not step into the private alleys off Hanamikoji Street in Gion, where the residents' council posts a 10,000 yen penalty for entering.
- Check Kyoto's official hourly congestion forecast at global.kyoto.travel before committing a morning to Arashiyama or the Kiyomizu approach.
