Share your experienceKinkaku-ji is the rare famous thing that is not overpriced. General admission is 500 yen, primary and middle school students pay 300 yen, and the temple is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. all year round. Against Kyoto's 2026 cost of visiting, where the top band of the city lodging tax is 10,000 yen per person per night, a 500 yen ticket to the Golden Pavilion is close to the best value in the city. What the price does not buy is time with it. The route through the grounds is a one-way loop and the pavilion is viewed from across the Mirror Pond rather than entered. The honest description is a walk of twenty to thirty minutes with one spectacular sightline near the start, which is where every other visitor is also standing. Plan it as one stop rather than the day. The 9:00 opening is the single best lever you have.
What was great
Five hundred yen, open every day of the year, and no reservation system to navigate. The gold leaf reflected in the Mirror Pond is a genuinely singular sight and the grounds are immaculately kept. For a city that has spent 2026 adding costs to visitors, this is one of the few headline attractions that has not moved its price out of reach.
What nearly ruined the trip
You cannot go inside the pavilion, and the loop is one-way, so if the main viewpoint is packed you cannot circle back and wait it out. The whole visit is short enough that people who cross the city for it alone often feel shortchanged. It is in the far north-west, so it costs you a bus ride each way.
