Kinkaku-ji

What it is

A Zen temple in north-west Kyoto whose top two floors are covered in gold leaf, set on a pond in a formal garden. The current pavilion is a 1955 reconstruction after the original was destroyed by arson in 1950.

Why travelers go

For one specific view: the gold pavilion reflected in the Mirror Pond, which is among the most recognisable images in Japan and considerably better in person than in photographs.

What is genuinely good

Five hundred yen, open all year, no advance booking required. The grounds are meticulously maintained and the entrance ticket is issued as a paper charm, which is a small thing people keep. In a city that has been raising visitor costs steadily, this price has not moved.

Downsides and tourist traps

The pavilion cannot be entered and the route is one-way, so a crowded viewpoint cannot be waited out. The visit is short for the journey involved. Mid-afternoon is markedly busier than opening time for exactly the same 500 yen.

Best for

First-time visitors to Kyoto, anyone on a budget given the price, and photographers who can be at the gate for opening.

Consider skipping if

You have one day in Kyoto and want depth rather than an icon, in which case Fushimi Inari or the Higashiyama temples give you considerably more time on your feet for your money.

Practical advice

Be there at 9:00. The pond view faces the crowd bottleneck and the pavilion catches morning light well. Combine it with Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji, which are close by on the same side of the city, otherwise you are spending most of the trip on a bus for a half-hour visit.

Tickets and reservations

General admission is 500 yen and primary and middle school students pay 300 yen. There is no advance reservation system; tickets are bought at the gate. Open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., all year round.

Getting there

Kyoto City Bus 101 or 205 from Kyoto Station to Kinkakuji-michi. Note that Kyoto abolished the bus-only day pass to keep tourists off local routes, so price the individual fares rather than assuming a pass.

Where it sits

Kita ward, in the far north-west of Kyoto, well away from the Higashiyama temple belt on the other side of the city. Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji are both nearby and are the natural pairings.

How long to allow

Thirty to forty-five minutes on site. Budget an hour and a half to two hours including the bus each way from central Kyoto.
