Share your experienceNijo Castle charges 800 yen for a castle admission ticket, with 400 yen for junior and senior high school students and 300 yen for elementary school students. Entry is free of charge for those under elementary school age. What makes it worth the trip is the Ninomaru Palace, and specifically its floors. They are built to chirp underfoot, the so-called nightingale floors, as a security measure against anyone approaching unheard. You walk the whole palace on them, and the sound follows you room to room. The painted screens inside are originals or high-quality reproductions depending on the room, and the rooms themselves are arranged by rank, so the further in you get the more restricted the access historically was. It is the clearest surviving illustration of how Tokugawa power was staged.
What was great
Eight hundred yen for a UNESCO World Heritage site with intact palace interiors is exceptional value, particularly in a city that put its lodging tax up to 10,000 yen a night at the top band in 2026. The nightingale floors are a genuine physical experience rather than a display, and the grounds and gardens are included.
What nearly ruined the trip
The Ninomaru Palace interior is a single one-way route in socks with no photography permitted, so it moves at the pace of the group. The Honmaru Palace requires a separate advance reservation and its own ticket. Coach tours arrive in waves and the palace corridors do not absorb them well.
