Practical tips
Editorial- Walk past the curbside touts to the official licensed yellow-cab queue, or book a ride-hailing pickup. Touts work the kerb outside arrivals at all four NAIA terminals, especially 1 and 3, and intercept foreigners before the official queue.
- Know the real fare. NAIA to Makati on the meter is roughly 200 to 300 pesos plus a small terminal surcharge, so a quoted flat fare several times that is the scam, not a premium.
- Budget the terminal fees. Since September 2025 they are 390 pesos for domestic flights, about 7 US dollars, and 950 pesos for international, about 17 dollars.
- Leave for the airport absurdly early. Metro Manila is the 14th most congested metro area in the world at 57.3 per cent congestion, and the roads around NAIA are the worst part of it.
- Book hotels and tours through established platforms only. Fake hotel and tour listings have surged in 2026, and a better rate offered through a messaging app is the most common form it takes.
- Give Intramuros a full morning, early. It is the one part of the city where the Spanish colonial period is still legible, and it is far more pleasant before the heat and the traffic build.
- Treat Manila as a gateway with a good day in it. Plan a night or two, then fly out to the islands, and build a large buffer into the trip back.
