Practical tips
Editorial- Check whether your country is on South Korea's temporary K-ETA exemption list, extended through December 31, 2026; if not, file the free e-Arrival digital card within three days before you land since paper arrival cards were discontinued January 1, 2026.
- Buy a T-money card for 2,500 won at any convenience store or station vending machine, it covers subway, bus, and most taxis, and gives free transfers between bus and subway within 30 minutes of tapping out, up to five transfers.
- At Gyeongbokgung, wear a full hanbok to get free admission instead of paying the roughly 3,000 won adult ticket, but budget 15,000 to 25,000 won for a four-hour rental near the palace gates, and know the palace is closed every Tuesday.
- Book restaurants in Seongsu-dong, Itaewon, and Hongdae days or weeks ahead if you want a table at anywhere popular, K-pop and K-drama tourism has made walk-in dining unreliable at the well-known spots.
- Keep tax-free shopping receipts for any single purchase of 15,000 won or more and export the goods within three months of purchase to claim a VAT refund, but note the 10 percent medical VAT refund for cosmetic and aesthetic procedures was abolished as of January 1, 2026.
