Practical tips
Editorial- Book flights before you finalize the budget. Japan's departure tax tripled from 1,000 to 3,000 yen on July 1, 2026, bundled into tickets, though bookings made before that date are exempt from the increase.
- Expect the accommodation tax as a separate on-site charge. Since March 1, 2026, Osaka's lodging tax is billed apart from the room rate even on prepaid reservations, at 200 to 500 yen per person per night depending on rate.
- Stay in a room under 5,000 yen a night and you pay no accommodation tax at all, which covers a lot of business hotels near Dotonbori.
- Get the 820 yen Osaka Metro day pass if you plan more than four rides. Single fares start at 190 yen for trips under 3 km and climb with distance.
- Base yourself in Osaka for the region rather than Kyoto. Kyoto and Nara are both easy day trips, and Osaka's rooms and food are cheaper than Kyoto's at every tier.
- Skip peak Golden Week and the autumn foliage weeks if crowds bother you. Japan still expects about 41.4 million foreign visitors in 2026 and the Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka corridor takes the brunt.
