Practical tips
Editorial- Book Acropolis tickets on the official hhticket.gr portal in advance, adult entry is 30 euros and slots in June through August commonly sell out 5 to 7 days ahead
- Avoid midday Acropolis visits in July and August, the site has closed during peak heat hours (roughly noon to 5pm) on multiple dates in past heatwaves, including July 2025 when temperatures hit around 42 Celsius
- Book the earliest slots, 8 to 10am, or the last slots, 5 to 7pm, since those sell out first and also avoid the worst heat and crowds
- Check if you qualify for free entry, EU citizens under 25 with ID and children under 6 are typically free, and there are designated free days annually plus free entry on the first Sunday of the month from November through March
- Skip restaurants right on Plaka's main tourist strip, prices there run 30 to 50 percent higher than equally good tavernas two or three blocks away, and walk away from any table where bread, water, or cutlery appears without being ordered since that often becomes a hidden 1 to 3 euro per person charge
- Use the metro over taxis when possible, a single ticket covers 90 minutes for 1.20 euros and a 5 day pass is 8.20 euros, but stay alert on crowded trains, especially around Monastiraki, Syntagma, Omonia, and Acropolis stations where pickpocketing is concentrated
- For airport transfers, the metro is a flat 9 euros one way (about 16 euros round trip), separate from city fares, and a licensed taxi or an app like FreeNow avoids the broken meter and detour scams reported around Athens taxis
