Practical tips
Editorial- Book any caldera-view room in Oia at least four to eight months ahead for peak season, and six months minimum for an August stay, since availability at the roughly 1,000-euro-plus suites disappears early.
- Skip the donkey ride up from the old port. Take the cable car instead, about 10 euros one way for adults and 5 euros for kids 6 to 12, a roughly three-minute ride versus a hot, animal-welfare-questionable climb.
- If arriving by cruise, expect a landing fee of 20 euros per person in June through September, 12 euros in April, May, and October, and 4 euros the rest of the year, on top of your cruise fare.
- Factor in the nightly climate resilience accommodation tax, from 2 euros at budget properties up to 15 euros at 5-star hotels during the April to October high season, charged separately at checkout.
- Check current seismic activity updates before booking if you are risk-averse. The major 2025 swarm ran a state of emergency from February 5 to March 3 and has since stabilized, but Santorini sits on an active volcanic caldera.
