Practical tips
Editorial- Check the US State Department's Israel advisory (Level 3, Reconsider Travel as of June 2026) and the UK FCDO page (updated July 22, 2026) yourself before booking, since both note the security situation can change quickly.
- Plan around Shabbat: local trains stop around midday Friday and don't resume until after dark Saturday, most buses pause mid to late Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, and there is no bus or train to Ben Gurion Airport during Shabbat, only pricier taxis.
- Get a Rav-Kav smart card for buses and the Red Line light rail; Tel Aviv buses have not accepted cash since January 2019.
- Budget deliberately: a sabich or falafel meal runs about $9.96 and a daily transit pass about $4.36, but overall prices average roughly 34 percent above the US, so a $65 a day budget is tight, not comfortable.
- Watch for jellyfish at the beaches in early summer, and note that Hilton Beach is the city's unofficial gay beach if that matters for where you plan to swim.
