Practical tips
Editorial- Buy an Istanbulkart (130 lira for the card) rather than paying cash fares; a single ride starts at 27 lira and each transfer within the window drops to 19.33, then 14.67, then as low as 9.27 lira.
- Hagia Sophia charges foreign visitors 25 euros for the upper gallery area, a fee in place since January 2024; children under 8 enter free with ID.
- Topkapi Palace's combined Palace, Harem, and Hagia Irene ticket runs 2,750 lira (about 55 euros) at the gate; it's closed Tuesdays and last entry is 16:30.
- The Blue Mosque is free with no ticket needed, but it closes to visitors roughly five times a day for prayer and until about 14:30 on Fridays, and dress code (shoulders and knees covered, headscarf for women) is enforced, so bring your own scarf rather than relying on the communal ones at the door.
- From Istanbul Airport (IST), the HAVAIST shuttle bus runs about 275 lira one way and is card or app only, cash is no longer accepted; from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), HAVABUS to Taksim is about 440 lira cash (roughly 100 lira more by card) and takes about 90 minutes.
- Only take taxis from the official marked ranks, confirm the meter is running before you move, and use an app like BiTaksi to lock in the route; a common airport scam is a driver claiming the card machine is broken to force a cash payment at an inflated rate.
- Check your visa status before booking: US, Canadian, and Australian citizens (among others) need an e-Visa, about 50 dollars, only through the official evisa.gov.tr site, while EU, UK, and Japanese passport holders currently enter visa-free for 90 days.
- Visit March to May or September to November for the best mix of mild weather and manageable crowds; August is the hottest and busiest month, while December through February is the cheapest but brings cold, rain, and occasional snow.
