Acropolis Museum

What it is

A purpose-built museum at the foot of the Acropolis, opened in 2009, holding the finds from the Acropolis slopes and summit, with a top-floor gallery displaying the surviving Parthenon frieze and metopes in their original arrangement.

Why travelers go

For the Parthenon Gallery, which aligns with the real building visible through the window and marks every absent sculpture with a blank cast. It is the clearest presentation of a contested collection anywhere.

What is genuinely good

Exceptional museum architecture that argues through arrangement rather than text. The glass floor over the excavated ancient neighbourhood is included at the entrance. Winter admission falls to 15,00 euros, and the museum runs free admission days including 6 March and 25 March.

Downsides and tourist traps

It is a second ticket on top of the Acropolis site itself. Peak season crowds build from mid-morning. The reduced rate does not fall in winter even though the general rate does.

Best for

Anyone visiting the Acropolis, which is effectively everyone in Athens, and particularly visitors interested in the Parthenon Marbles question who want to see how the case is actually made.

Consider skipping if

You have half a day in Athens and have not yet been up to the Acropolis itself. The site comes first; this is the companion to it, not a substitute.

Practical advice

Go early or late in the day in summer. Do the Acropolis first and the museum second, because the gallery makes far more sense once you have stood on the hill. If your dates are flexible, the winter season from 1 November is 5 euros cheaper and considerably quieter.

Tickets and reservations

General admission is 20 euros with reduced admission at 10 euros in the summer season, 1 April to 31 October. In the winter season, 1 November to 31 March, general admission is 15,00 euros and reduced stays at 10,00 euros. Reduced and free tickets are obtained through specific channels rather than the general desk, and there are free admission days including 6 March and 25 March.

Getting there

Akropoli station on Metro line 2 is directly outside the entrance. It is a short walk from the Plaka and from the pedestrianised Dionysiou Areopagitou street that runs below the Acropolis.

Where it sits

Makrygianni, immediately south-east of the Acropolis rock, on the pedestrian street that circles the base of the hill. Plaka and Monastiraki are within fifteen minutes on foot.

How long to allow

Two hours. The Parthenon Gallery alone deserves forty-five minutes, and the ground-floor excavation is worth stopping for on the way in.

Accessibility

The museum is step-free with lifts to all levels, which is a marked contrast to the Acropolis site itself.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Go, and go after you have climbed the hill rather than before. Twenty euros is fair for what is one of the best museum buildings of the century, and if you can travel in the winter season it is 15.
