What it is
A charcuterie shop and meze restaurant near the central market in Athens, serving Anatolian Greek food from the Karamanlides tradition alongside its own cured meats and cheeses.
Why travelers eat here
For food that is genuinely different from taverna cooking, cut from a counter in front of you by people who will happily explain what it is.
What is genuinely good
Its own pastirma and sausages, an excellent cheese selection, staff who talk you through the counter, and prices that are honest for the quality.
Downsides
Closed Sundays. Cramped and busy. The market district is workmanlike rather than charming.
Best for
Anyone tired of moussaka, and anyone who likes charcuterie enough to plan a meal around it.
Consider eating elsewhere if
You are vegetarian. The kitchen can manage, but you would be ordering around the entire reason to come.
Practical advice
Book for dinner or arrive early for lunch. Order from the counter as well as the menu. Buy halva or pastirma on the way out, because the shop is open later than most in Athens.
Prices and reservations
A la carte, mid-range by Athens standards. Shop items priced separately, with handmade mastiha halva at 9.00 euros. Reservations advisable in the evening.
Getting there
Metro line 1 or 2 to Omonia or Monastiraki, then a five to ten minute walk to Sokratous Street by the central market.
Where it sits
Sokratous Street beside the Varvakios central market, a working commercial quarter between Omonia and Monastiraki, busy by day and quieter at night.
How long to allow
An hour and a half.
The RuinMyTrip verdict
The most interesting meal in central Athens and not expensive. Go Monday to Saturday, order off the counter, and buy something on the way out.

Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani opens Monday to Saturday, restaurant 12:00 to 23:00 and retail 08:00 to 21:00, and closes on Sundays. Handmade mastiha halva is 9.00 euros on the shop side. It is a charcuterie shop first and a restaurant second, which is the whole point: the pastirma, sausages and cheeses on the plates come off the counter you walked past, and the staff will cut and explain anything you point at. The food…
