Share your experienceThe Museum of Cycladic Art charges 12 euros for general admission and 9 euros reduced or for group visits. It opens Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 17:00, Sunday 11:00 to 17:00 and Thursday 10:00 to 20:00, and is closed on Tuesdays. The Cycladic figurines are the reason to come: flat, white, folded-arm marble figures made in the islands around 3000 BC, which look so much like twentieth-century sculpture that Brancusi, Modigliani and Moore all borrowed from them. Seeing several hundred in one place makes the debt obvious. The museum also holds a good ancient Greek collection and a Cypriot one, and its temporary exhibitions are among the most ambitious in Athens.
What was great
The largest collection of Cycladic art anywhere, beautifully lit and spaced. Free for under-18s. Thursday evening opening to 20:00 is the best slot in the week. The cafe in the glass atrium is genuinely good.
What nearly ruined the trip
Twelve euros for a fairly small permanent collection, and temporary exhibitions can push the ticket to 14. Closed Tuesdays. The Kolonaki setting means everything around it is expensive too.
