Share your experienceA ticket to visit the Acropolis of Athens is 30,00 euros through the official Hellenic Heritage ticket store. That is the headline, but it is not the decision that will determine whether you enjoy this. The hour you go is. The rock is bare limestone with almost no shade, the marble underfoot is polished slick by two and a half thousand years of feet, and in July and August the site regularly closes in the middle of the day when temperatures make it unsafe. People who book a midday slot in summer are the ones who come away saying it was overrated. Go at opening, or in the last two hours before close. The light is better at both ends, the crowd is thinner, and you will actually be able to stand and look at the Parthenon rather than shuffling past it looking for shade.
What was great
It is the single most consequential building in Western architecture and you can walk up to it. The site includes the Propylaia, the Erechtheion with its caryatid porch, the Temple of Athena Nike and the theatres on the southern slope, so one ticket covers a great deal. Early and late slots are genuinely pleasant.
What nearly ruined the trip
Thirty euros is a significant increase on the historic price and there is a further ticket if you want the Acropolis Museum below. There is essentially no shade on the summit. Midday closures in summer heat are real and can remove your slot. The polished marble is slippery in any weather.
