Practical tips
Editorial- Budget the tourist tax separately. Porto charges about 3 euros per person per night, up from around 2, capped at seven nights for a maximum of 21 euros per trip, and Vila Nova de Gaia across the river has raised its own tax too.
- Check that your rental is legally registered. Portugal froze new alojamento local registrations under the Mais Habitacao programme and fines for unregistered operators have been reported up to 40,000 euros.
- Get the Andante Tour 24-hour pass at 7.50 euros if you plan more than five rides; single metro tickets are 1.40 euros.
- Bring a rain jacket in any season. Porto gets roughly 1,146 to 1,237 mm of rain a year and is Atlantic, not Mediterranean.
- Eat the francesinha away from the Ribeira waterfront. It runs about 9 to 10 euros at normal places and up to 15 at tourist-facing ones, for the same sandwich.
- Sleep on the Gaia side if rates are better, but check its tourist tax before assuming it is cheaper; the port lodges and the bridge crossing are the reason many people stay there anyway.
