Practical tips
Editorial- Use contactless or an Oyster card, never paper Tube tickets, so you automatically get the daily cap of 8.90 pounds for Zones 1 to 2 (frozen until March 2027) instead of paying full fare per journey.
- Book West End theatre for a midweek matinee in January to March or September to mid October if you can, since the average cheapest ticket rose almost 25 percent in the past year to 30.55 pounds and weekend evenings cost the most.
- Keep your phone in a zipped bag or inside pocket, not in your hand, especially around Camden Market, Covent Garden, Oxford Street, and King's Cross or Waterloo stations, where London's roughly 71,000 phone snatchings in 2025 were concentrated.
- Visit the British Museum's permanent collection while it's still free, general admission has no charge and donation boxes are suggestion only, but a December 2025 government review recommended charging international visitors so this could change.
- If you're driving into central London, budget 18 pounds a day for the Congestion Charge (raised from 15 pounds on 2 January 2026) plus 12.50 pounds a day for ULEZ if your vehicle isn't compliant or electric.
- Watch for a new overnight tourist levy on your hotel or Airbnb bill, London is moving toward a charge of either 2 to 4 pounds per person per night or around 5 percent of the room rate, following Edinburgh's July 2026 rollout of a similar scheme.
