St Paul's Cathedral

What it is

Christopher Wren's cathedral on Ludgate Hill, completed in 1711 after the Great Fire, with a dome that dominated the London skyline for two and a half centuries and three climbable galleries inside and around it.

Why travelers go

For the dome climb and the view from the Golden Gallery, and for one of the finest church interiors in Britain. The Whispering Gallery is a genuine acoustic curiosity rather than a marketing line.

What is genuinely good

The climb is memorable in a way lift-served viewpoints never are, and each of the three galleries is a distinct experience. The crypt holds Nelson, Wellington and Wren himself. The building sits at the foot of the Millennium Bridge, so it combines naturally with Tate Modern across the river.

Downsides and tourist traps

At 27 pounds it is expensive, and the climb that justifies the price is inaccessible to many. Sightseeing does not run on Sundays. The upper stairs are narrow, enclosed and slow when the cathedral is busy, which makes them hard work on a warm day.

Best for

Anyone who can manage several hundred steps and wants the best earned view in London, plus visitors interested in Wren, in English naval and military history, or in church architecture.

Consider skipping if

You cannot climb stairs comfortably, in which case a large part of the ticket value is unavailable to you. Skip it also if you have already committed to Westminster Abbey and are watching the budget.

Practical advice

Go early on a weekday and climb first while your legs are fresh and the stairwells are quiet. Check that your visit is not on a Sunday. Cross the Millennium Bridge to Tate Modern afterwards, which costs nothing and is the best short walk in the city.

Monday to Saturday sightseeing is 27 pounds per adult and 10.50 pounds per child, with discounts for families and groups. Sunday is a day of worship and sightseeing admission does not operate.

Getting there

St Paul's on the Central line is directly outside. Mansion House and Blackfriars are both short walks, and the Millennium Bridge connects on foot to Bankside and Tate Modern.

Where it sits

Ludgate Hill in the City of London, the financial district, which means the surrounding streets are busy on weekdays and notably quiet at weekends. The riverside and Bankside are a five-minute walk over the bridge.

How long to allow

Two hours including the full climb. Around an hour if you stay on the cathedral floor and in the crypt.

Accessibility

The cathedral floor and crypt are accessible, but the Whispering, Stone and Golden Galleries are reached only by stairs, so the dome section of the visit is not available to everyone.
