Westminster Abbey

What it is

A royal church in Westminster, the coronation site of English and British monarchs since 1066, the burial place of many of them, and home to Poets' Corner. It is a working church as well as a visitor attraction.

Why travelers go

Because no other single building holds this much of English history in one place. The coronation chair, the royal tombs and Poets' Corner are all inside one route.

What is genuinely good

The concentration of history is genuinely without equal, the audio guide is included rather than an extra, and there are real child and concession rates. Attending a service is free, which is by far the cheapest way to be inside the building.

Downsides and tourist traps

At 31 pounds it is among the most expensive church admissions in Europe. The visitor route is one-way and crowded, so you move at the speed of the group. Prices shift by date, so the published rate depends on when you look. Photography is restricted through much of the interior.

Best for

Anyone with an interest in English history or literature, first-time visitors to London who want one major historic interior, and families who benefit from the 14 pound child rate.

Consider skipping if

You are on a budget and have already paid for St Paul's. Two expensive church visits in one trip is a lot, and St Paul's dome climb is the more physically memorable of the two. Also skip the paid visit if you would be content attending a service instead.

Practical advice

Book online for a specific time and go early, because the route congests badly by late morning. If cost is the obstacle, check service times and attend one, which is free and puts you inside the same building. Allow more time than you think for Poets' Corner, which is where the visit is actually worth the money.

Published sightseeing prices are 31 pounds for adults and families of one adult and one child, 28 pounds for over-65s and students, 14 pounds for children aged 6 to 17, and free for children aged 0 to 5 and Association members. Prices are published in dated bands, so the exact figure varies with the period of your visit.

Getting there

Westminster on the Circle, District and Jubilee lines is a two-minute walk. St James's Park on the Circle and District lines is a similar distance from the other side.

Where it sits

Westminster, directly beside the Houses of Parliament and across from Parliament Square. The area is dense with government buildings and heavy with tour groups, and it is a short walk along the river to the London Eye.

How long to allow

Ninety minutes to two hours for the full route with the audio guide. Less if you are moving briskly, but the routing makes it hard to go much faster than the crowd allows.

Accessibility

Step-free access throughout the main route, with hearing loops and audio guides. Mobility aids including manual wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge, and a lift gives step-free wheelchair access to the galleries. The cloisters are the exception, reached by ten steps and a steep ramp. The nearest step-free Underground station is Westminster.

Extraordinary building, uncomfortable price. Worth it once if English history or literature matters to you, and best experienced early in the day before the route jams. If money is tight, go to a service instead and see the same interior for nothing.
