Because it is one of the great free museums anywhere, and because the building is as much the point as the collection. Very few museums of this quality cost nothing to enter.
What is genuinely good

Downsides and tourist traps

Families, anyone in London on a budget, repeat visitors who can treat it as a one-hour stop, and people who care about Victorian architecture as much as about the collection.
Consider skipping if
You have one day in London and no particular interest in natural history. It is a superb museum but it is not the thing that makes London distinctive, and the Victoria and Albert next door may suit you better.
Practical advice
Book a free entry ticket in advance and go straight past the main hall, coming back to it later when the entry surge has moved on. The last two hours of the day are markedly calmer than the middle. South Kensington station connects by tunnel, which matters in the rain.

Getting there
South Kensington on the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines, with a pedestrian tunnel running from the station to the museums, which is the sensible route in bad weather.

South Kensington, on Exhibition Road alongside the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Science Museum. Three major free museums sit within a few minutes of each other, which makes this the highest-value square mile in London for anyone not spending money.
How long to allow
Two hours is a good visit. Ninety minutes is enough if you pick two galleries. Because it is free there is no penalty in leaving early and returning another day.

Step-free access is available and the museum publishes detailed access information; the tunnel route from South Kensington station avoids the street crossing entirely.
