Practical tips
Editorial- Book Edinburgh Castle online in advance: adult tickets run roughly 21 to 24 pounds online versus more at the gate, and entry is now assigned in 30-minute timed slots that sell out in July and August.
- A new 5 percent visitor levy started 24 July 2026 on paid overnight stays for the first five nights; it applies only to bookings made on or after 1 October 2025, so factor it into any hotel quote from now on.
- If you are not a British or Irish citizen and lack UK immigration status, apply for a UK ETA before you fly; it costs 20 pounds per person as of April 2026 and takes only minutes online, but it is separate from your passport and easy to forget.
- Avoid the Royal Mile's whisky and tartan shops closest to the castle for actual purchases; prices are often quoted verbally rather than posted, and the street has documented theft and overcharging complaints. Buy whisky at a supermarket or a reputable specialist like Royal Mile Whiskies instead.
- If the Fringe (7 to 31 August 2026) is not the specific draw, avoid it: budget hotel rates jump from roughly 55 to 140 pounds a night up to 150 to 300, and the best-located rooms are typically booked out by January or February.
- Lothian Buses run a flat adult single fare of 2.20 pounds after the February 2026 fare revision, with a day ticket around 4.30 to 4.50 pounds, cheaper than the Airlink airport bus or tram for getting around once you are in the city.
- From Edinburgh Airport, the tram runs 7.90 pounds one-way (9.50 pounds open return) and takes about 30 minutes to the city centre; the Airlink 100 bus is 6.00 pounds single (8.50 return), runs 24 hours including when the tram does not, but ask locally about journey time before assuming it is faster.
- Visit in June through August for the warmest, driest weather (roughly 19C by day, around 70 to 83 mm of rain a month), or January through March for hotel rates 20 to 40 percent below summer if you can tolerate cold and rain.
